Bob Harvey grew up on a small farm in eastern Colorado…..an arid region that prompted Bob to frequently quip that “you had to work hard just to raise a tumbleweed”. The upside of that existence was that he was frequently picking up arrowheads, rusted guns, handcuffs and other historical artifacts that pointed to an earlier time when Native Americans, longhorn steers and drovers roamed the region. He was a frequent reader of “Red Ryder” novels and comic books and later became a Zane Grey fan. His extensive travels in the states where the Chisholm Trail snaked through the hills and prairies offered opportunities to visit museums and communities where cattle drives were frequent….fostering an increased knowledge of the adventure and danger that was herding cattle.
